Elspeth whirled to face them, ashen-faced, her throat like sandpaper.
âWhatâs wrong?â she said.
âWhatâs wrong? Whatâs wrong? Take a look at yourself. What are you fucking wearing?â
âIâ¦Iâ¦â
Aiden laughed.
âJesus Christ,â said Laura. âBatman? How old are you?â
Elspeth caught herself in the mirror. She turned from it, looking back over her shoulder. There, on the seat of her underpants, was the classic yellow and black bat-symbol.
âWhat?â she said, utterly disorientated. âI like Batman.â She shook her head. How was she in a position where she had to explain her choice of underwear to a group of arseholes?
âShe likes Batman,â said Aiden, dissolving into giggles. âI bet Deek has a pair of those!â
âShut it, I do not!â
Robert put his head in his hands as Elspeth tried to process what was happening.
âElspeth, my dear,â he said in his most condescending tone, âThis scene is supposed to beâ¦erotic. And here you are, in the middle of this sensual moment, parading your arse around in Batman knickers. I mean, do you want everyone to laugh at you?â
Her hands tightened into balls. It helped to snap her out of her fear-induced lethargy. âYou know, Robert, I didnât really expect anyone to see my underwear today. Iâm sorry theyâre not erotic enough for you, you talentless fucking cunt.â
That shut them up for a minute.
She took the time to grab her clothes, throwing her jeans back on. She wanted to storm out, but there was nowhere to go, the four of them effectively blocking the only exit. Elspeth supposed that was no accident.
âOkay, Iâm sorry, Els,â he said. âI am. I just didnât expect that from a grown woman.â
âIf youâre trying to apologise, youâre making a real shitty job of it,â she snapped, slipping back into the blouse and pulling it tight across her chest.
âNo, honestly, I truly am sorry. Can we go again? Please?â
Elspeth went to the sink and took a drink of water. âAnd what about Batman?â she asked sarcastically.
She looked at Robert, saw the wheels turning, imagined a hamster on a running wheel inside his head, powering up his synapses. He turned to Laura.
âWhat are you wearing?â
âExcuse me?â
âUnder there,â he said, gesturing at her dress. âWhat are you wearing?â
Elspeth watched Aiden and Deek, two naughty little schoolboys giggling about girlsâ underpants. She had never been so disgusted.
âIâm not wearing any,â said Laura, trying to kill the subject stone dead.
âBollocks,â said Robert. âYou never go commando. Come on, letâs see them.â
âButâ¦â
âHurry up. Deek, Aiden, look away. Thatâs my woman Iâm talking to.â
Oh yes, heaven forbid that those two jerks should see his woman in her underwear. After all, sheâs his own private property.
Laura lifted her dress. Robert nodded.
âRed. Perfect. Theyâll match her bra. Take them off.â
Silence.
âYou bastard,â said Laura. âYou rotten, filthy bastard.â
She reached under the hem of her dress and stepped out of her underwear, throwing them at Robert. He, in turn, handed them to Elspeth.
âPut these on,â he said. When he turned back to Laura, she struck him across the face.
âGo to hell,â she said, pushing Deek aside, kicking the door open and slamming it shut behind her.
